Originally established on Ridgelake Avenue in Metairie, New Life has been a vital part of the Jefferson Parish community for more than 50 years.
After feeling a call to start a Church in Metairie, Brother James Thomas left the First UPC of New Orleans in 1961 and started the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Metairie (which is now named New Life Church). It all began in a little brick building with 3 Sunday school rooms. Starting with just a few people, the Church quickly took roots in the community and, in 1968, the Church became a part of the United Pentecostal Church, International.
Following Brother Thomas, the next major landmark was the election of Brother Bingaman. He served from 1968 until 1972. He was a wonderful man of God and he is most likely the reason we have a Church here today. His commitment and dedication to the Kingdom of God kept the work of God in Metairie moving forward.
Brother Bingaman literally gave everything he had to keep the Church doors open. Using his life savings, he purchased the land at 3929 W. Metairie Avenue and constructed a beautiful building there. He has since past on and is now in Heaven, but he was a vital part of the foundation of this great Church.
Following Brother Bingaman, in 1974, Pastor Melvin Gray was elected. He would serve as pastor for the next 3 years.
In 1977, Reverend Jerry Jones (currently the General Secretary of the United Pentecostal Church, International) was elected to become our Pastor. New Life experienced a great time of revival under his anointed leadership. Brother Jones was young and full of energy and his passion for preaching, and dedication to Apostolic Truth, began to bring about mighty Revival.
Up until that time, the Church had struggled to keep things going but, during Brother Jones’s 8 years of pastoring, New Life saw the congregation grow to 150 people.
During his time as pastor, Brother Jones was elected to serve as the Louisiana Youth President and would later move on to National Youth President of the UPCI organization, which meant he had to resign and move to Hazelwood, Missouri.
Following Brother Jones, in 1985, Reverend Keith Layne was elected Pastor. He spent 3 years at New Life and the Church continued to become a vibrant part of community. Brother Layne enhanced the music ministry of the Church and helped make New Life a wonderful place to attend.
In May of 1988, Reverend Tommy S Parker was elected as Pastor of New and we have seen tremendous growth as a result of his anointed preaching, dedicated leadership and his genuine love of people.
During his ministry, the Church was officially changed to New Life Tabernacle. Brother Parker led the Church on many remodeling and construction projects matching the tremendous growth that the Church was experiencing. In 1988, he was elected by 60 people and on Easter Sunday 2009 we had over 600 people.
In 1998, New Life sold its’ building on 3929 W. Metairie Ave, and for the next 2 years were without a Church building however revival continued in a rented gymnasium during that time and in 2000, New Life opened its new doors on 6017 Airline Drive. Pastor Parker has continued to lead this Church into unprecedented growth!
Along with Pastor Parker’s wonderful ministry and leadership, New Life was blessed with the anointed singing and compassionate heart of his wife, Sister Dorothy Parker. Under Sister Parker’s direction the music ministry of New Life has flourished. New Life has been invited to sing all over the world and has helped create a continued atmosphere of worship and praise at New Life.
Pastor Tommy, and his wife Dot Parker, make a wonderful team; he preaches worship, she creates worship through music. The end result is Revival at New Life. The Parker’s passion for people and his love for worship has become a trademark of New Life. As the Church has continued to see apostolic growth, God has blessed this Church with many years of stability in the ministry.
New Life is a Church that has been blessed with great leadership and will continue to work to develop people in their relationship with God.
This is not just another Church, this is NEW LIFE!
